The number of people who directly used the app was only around 270,000. In other words, a system was built that started with a few hundred thousand people and, through friend networks, reached into the digital lives of tens of millions.

In 2014, Cambridge-linked researcher Aleksandr Kogan used a Facebook personality-test app called thisisyourdigitallife. The app presented itself as harmless academic research. Participants were reportedly paid $1 to $2 each. But the people who downloaded the app were not just opening up their own information. Because of Facebook’s rules at the time, their friends’ data could also be pulled into a much wider data pool.

This is where the real ugliness of the scandal begins. Without your permission, without your knowledge, without your consent, your digital footprint could become raw material for a political manipulation machine. I might never have downloaded the app. I might never have approved anything. But because one of my friends took that test, my data could still be dragged into that system. That is not consent. That is exploitation.

Cambridge Analytica, with a relatively low cost, started from a few hundred thousand app users and reached the data of tens of millions of people through friend networks. That was exactly the point: in the digital platform economy, the privacy of millions was horrifyingly cheap.

Facebook was the one that allowed its app ecosystem to remain so loose, so weakly controlled, and so vulnerable to abuse.

Facebook later said in its own explanation that it learned in 2015 that Kogan had transferred data to Cambridge Analytica, removed the app, and obtained certifications saying the data had been deleted. In other words, the company’s instinct was not to conduct a serious audit or warn everyone involved. Its instinct was to accept, at face value, a version of events that was obviously convenient.

That is why this cannot be reduced to a story about one rogue company cheating the system. Facebook did not even need to directly sell this data by hand. The real problem was that it built the system that made this exploitation possible.

And it gets worse. Later reporting showed that even after Facebook learned about the transfer in 2015, it did not carry out a serious audit and did not immediately inform the affected users. According to court records reported by Reuters, Zuckerberg himself accepted that Facebook knew in 2015, did not conduct an audit, and did not notify users at that stage. Facebook only began showing notices to affected users in 2018, after the scandal had already exploded around the world. So the apology did not come first. The exposure came first. The apology came later.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office also fined Facebook £500,000, the maximum possible under the law at the time, for lack of transparency and security failures. The same investigation also found serious data-protection violations involving Cambridge Analytica. So this was never just an “ethical debate.” Public authorities treated it as a serious breach.

The 2016 Trump Campaign: Your Data Became A Political Weapon

What Cambridge Analytica did was not just advertising. The company tried to turn people into politically classifiable targets by combining Facebook-derived data with other commercial data sources such as credit information, club memberships, and consumer habits.

Reuters reported that Cambridge Analytica worked for Trump’s 2016 campaign. Reuters also reported, based on court records, that the company used profiling techniques to predict and influence voter behavior. So the issue here was not simply “showing ads.” The issue was attempting to anticipate, model, and steer human behavior.

This is why the scandal matters. Political campaigns had used data before. But this was something far darker. At the center of this model was not open political debate. It was invisible classification, psychological inference, and customized pressure mechanisms. The ICO report also made clear that formal investigations were opened into invisible data processing and the microtargeting of political ads. That meant that what people saw, what made them angry, what frightened them, and what they would react to were all being separately calculated. Democracy was being pushed away from public debate and dragged into hidden personality profiling.

Facebook was also the delivery system. The propaganda did not float in the air. It moved through Facebook’s own advertising infrastructure. That is what makes the whole thing even uglier. The platform that made the extraction possible was also the platform through which optimized political messaging could be delivered back to the public. The machine profited both from the data and from the influence built on top of that data.

The Dark Mechanism Of Manipulation

The dirtiest part of this operation was not simply persuading undecided voters. There was a darker logic at work.

High-reaction voter clusters were identified, and then they were fed content designed to intensify fear, anger, and a sense of threat.

That is the point people often miss. This was not just about convincing someone to like one candidate more than another. It was also about provoking outrage, deepening panic, distorting reality, and creating emotional volatility that could then be politically exploited.

And the operation did not stop there.

For example, voter groups seen as more likely to lean Democratic but less likely to turn out could be shown content designed to erode their trust in the system and lower their motivation to vote.

So even if the model concluded that you could not be persuaded to join the other side, you could still be targeted as long as you could be demoralized, disgusted, exhausted, or pushed away from participation altogether. In that logic, you are not a citizen. You are a behavioral probability. A manipulable variable. A target to be moved, slowed, agitated, or discouraged.

Everyone Trapped In Their Own Reality Prison

The even more dangerous part was this: not everyone was seeing the same propaganda. Two people living in the same neighborhood could be placed inside entirely different political realities. One person would be fed fear. Another would be fed rage. Another would be fed hopelessness.

Most of this content was invisible to everyone else. If I could see the nonsense my neighbor was being shown, maybe I could challenge it, talk to them, confront it. But in this system, everybody is trapped in their own reality bubble. Facebook became a direct enabler of that atomization. It did not just polarize society. It fragmented people away from one another.

In that kind of environment, shared public reality starts to collapse. People are not only divided. They lose the ability even to see what kinds of manipulative content others are being exposed to. To me, that was one of the most terrifying aspects of the scandal. Because what was being broken here was not just privacy. It was social reality itself.

Cambridge Analytica did not begin this dirty model with Trump. According to hidden-camera footage reported by Reuters and broadcast by Channel 4, the company boasted that it had run Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2013 and 2017 campaigns in Kenya. The company denied parts of those claims, but that is precisely the point: wherever elections existed, a market was emerging in which data extraction and political operations could be fused together. People were no longer being treated as citizens. They were being sliced into manageable electoral segments.

The Brexit side was not clean either. The ICO report clearly stated that formal investigations were opened into claims that personal data had been invisibly processed and political ads microtargeted during the EU referendum. So Cambridge Analytica was never just the scandal of one country. It was an early demonstration of how digital politics could be poisoned across borders.

In countries where institutional oversight is weaker, civil society pressure is more limited, and data-protection regimes are more fragile, these kinds of operations find easier ground. As power inequalities grow, people become cheaper targets.

That is one of the ugliest truths in all of this. The less protected you are, the easier you become to profile, pressure, exploit, and manipulate.

Ukrainian Women And The Gendered Dimension Of This Rot

Now let me come to the part I do not want softened.

According to Reuters’ reporting on the Channel 4 undercover recordings, Cambridge Analytica executives were heard talking not only about data operations, but also about using bribes, former intelligence agents, and Ukrainian sex workers to entrap rival politicians. Notice what this means. This is not gossip. This is not a rumor floating around the internet. This is the kind of filth company executives themselves were heard discussing.

I cannot dismiss that as merely “unethical.” To me, this is one of the most disgusting faces of dirty, male-dominated power politics. These people do not see women as human beings. They see them as operational material. And when they speak about women coming from war, poverty, migration, and violence as if they are disposable pieces in a trap, what you are looking at is not sophistication. It is moral rot.

As a woman, I do not want to use neutral language here. Because there is nothing neutral about any of this. People are playing with data, with elections, with human dignity, and with women’s bodies as if all of it were just equipment in the same dirty toolbox. That is not intelligence. That is corruption. That is decay. That is treating women who are trying to escape violence and deprivation as sexual commodities in political operations. That is the filth at the heart of this system.

Why “There Was No Security Breach” Was An Even More Disturbing Defense

One of Facebook’s most disturbing defenses was this: there had been no classic security breach. Technically, users had given the app permission.

But that was exactly the problem. If this had been only a technical breach, then the story could have been framed as a malfunction. What we are dealing with here is something much worse: an architecture that presented itself as consent while functioning as exploitation.

Giving people a few lines of permission text and then turning their friend networks into raw material for political profiling does not become innocent just because it fit the rules of the time. If anything, that only proves how rotten those rules were.

This was not an exception to the business model. It was a demonstration of the business model. A systematic one. A deliberate one. The kind of structure that treats human life as analyzable inventory.

Facebook’s own explanation more or less concedes the point. The access had been taken “within the rules” of that time, yet the result was the loss of control over millions of people’s information. That is not a reassuring defense. It is an indictment.

The Most Terrifying Lesson Of This Scandal

This scandal also revealed what it means when digital platforms begin to know us too well.

Academic studies have shown that even a limited number of Facebook Likes can be used to produce surprisingly strong inferences about people’s sensitive traits and personality tendencies.

That matters because once a platform or a political operator can infer who you are, what you fear, what you desire, what offends you, and what kind of messaging can move you, the game changes. The question is no longer “what shoes might you buy?” The question becomes: who are you attracted to, what frightens you, what kind of story demoralizes you, what kind of trigger makes you react?

Another 2015 PNAS study showed that computer-based judgments from digital footprints could outperform some judgments made by people close to us. That is what makes this model so dangerous. It is not just watching. It is inferring. It is mapping vulnerabilities.

That is why I have never found the phrase “I have nothing to hide” convincing. The issue is not hiding a secret. The issue is having your behavior modeled by others. It is having your fears, habits, sensitivities, routines, and weak points turned into the raw material of commercial and political engineering. That is what Cambridge Analytica exposed.

Cambridge Analytica’s entire promise was this: not just to understand data, but to use it to shape behavior.

They are not only trying to archive your past. They are trying to calculate your future.

Facebook’s Fake Regret And The Real Problem

After the scandal exploded, Facebook suspended Cambridge Analytica and related entities from the platform. Then came the predictable apology language, the “we are learning lessons” lines, the promises of greater security. But to me, the real problem never changed.

This is bigger than one bad company. The problem is a digital economy that treats human behavior as something measurable, sellable, and steerable. Facebook was not just a badly managed platform in this story. It was one of the central environments in which this extraction-and-influence model was allowed to thrive.

And this is exactly why the relationship between Facebook and Cambridge Analytica cannot be written off as a minor mistake involving one academic intermediary.

It happened because an app system, dressed up as academic research, was able to gain access to an enormous volume of user data.

That is the structural issue. Not just one company. Not just one app. Not just one scandal. A whole logic of extraction.

Facebook’s market value also took a serious hit after the scandal broke. Reuters reported that the company’s shares fell by more than 16 percent, wiping out roughly $50 billion in market value in two days. At that point the market noticed something obvious: these platforms are not valuable only because they are “technology companies.” They are valuable because of how deeply they can penetrate human life, harvest it, and monetize it. When trust cracks, the balance sheet cracks too.

There Is No Easy Escape: We Are Cornered By A Handful Of Platforms

Maybe social media does not matter to you. Maybe you think, “I have nothing to hide anyway.” But even if you stopped using these platforms, even if you deleted your accounts, your behavioral traces would not magically disappear from the broader data economy.

And in practice, most people do not even have the luxury of complete exit. In many places, Facebook means access, visibility, work, communication, and basic participation. If not Facebook, then Google. If not Google, then Apple. And sitting slightly further back is Amazon, through shopping infrastructure and cloud systems like AWS. In the end, we are tied to three or four giant platforms far more deeply than most people want to admit.

Their business model, especially Facebook’s, is built on mining us as data, packaging us as audiences, and then selling influence back onto our own lives through advertising and targeting. That is why ethical behavior in this area is not just difficult for them. It cuts directly against the logic of their business. Exploitation is not an accident here. It is the revenue model.

Conclusion: This Was Not An Exception, It Was The Model Itself

Anyone who still describes Cambridge Analytica as “just a data scandal” is describing it too narrowly. Yes, it was data theft. But it was also behavioral engineering. It was election manipulation. It was the invisible fragmentation of democratic space. And yes, it was also a mirror reflecting a culture rotten enough to treat women’s bodies and women’s vulnerability as usable tools inside dirty political operations.

This is a massive problem. Bigger, in many ways, than crude election fraud fantasies about stolen ballot boxes or fake ballot papers. Because this kind of manipulation is global, scalable, deniable, and often invisible while it is happening. And it will not fix itself.

To me, the core truth of this story is simple: we are not using free services. We are living inside systems that gradually classify, dissect, predict, and steer us. That is why the issue is not just “be careful what apps you download.” The issue is understanding that what appears in front of us is not neutral by default. The political content we see may not be part of open democratic debate at all. It may be a customized influence operation built specifically for us.

Because at the center of this system is not persuasion. It is not dialogue. It is not truth. It is the search for your weak point, and the pressure applied exactly there.
