Street Fighter’s two legendary characters, Ryu Hoshi and Ken Masters, have been among the most recognizable faces in gaming since 1987. From the white gi and red headband to the cry of “Hadouken!” and the flaming Shoryuken, these characters form perhaps the most iconic duo in fighting game history. So what are the real differences between these two characters who look so similar at first glance?

A Shared Past: Students Of Gouken

To understand Ryu and Ken, you first have to look at their shared past. Both are students of the legendary master Gouken, which is why their fighting styles show great similarities. Even though they were trained by the same teacher, each of them ends up following a very different path.

This move is a terrifying technique, banned for thousands of years, designed to send the enemy’s soul directly to hell.

Ryu is not just a powerful fighter in the Street Fighter universe, but also a warrior in pursuit of perfection.

With the permission of his master Gouken, Ryu entered the Street Fighter Circuit and faced Sagat, the champion of the era and the greatest fighter of his time. In that legendary match, Ryu managed to defeat Sagat and left the massive scar that Sagat still carries on his chest today. But this victory became a dark turning point in Ryu’s story.

After Gouken’s death, Ryu withdrew into isolation and began searching for true power and the ultimate point a martial artist could reach. The main reason is that compared to Ken, all of Ryu’s moves take away much more of the opponent’s energy. Every hit, every kick, every Hadouken deals more damage.

Ken: The Flaming Dragon

Ken Masters comes from the same foundation as Ryu, but his path is built more on style, speed, and aggression than disciplined solitude.

Unlike Ryu, Ken Masters comes from a wealthy family. He was sent from America to Japan to train under Gouken, and during that period he formed a close friendship with Ryu. But Ken’s motivation is different from Ryu’s. Rather than chasing perfection, he prefers to enjoy power and take pleasure in life.

From a gameplay perspective, Ken has focused on developing the close-range technique Shoryuken, the Rising Dragon Fist. Ken’s Shoryuken is so advanced that he can cut diagonally across the screen with it. His signature flaming Shoryuken is the most important feature that sets him apart from his rivals.

Ken is relatively faster than Ryu. His movements are quicker and his combinations flow more smoothly. But this speed advantage comes at the cost of raw damage output.
