Antalya’s Accidentally Discovered Natural Wonder in 2017: Tazi Canyon

Located on the northern side of Köprülü Canyon National Park, Tazi Canyon was accidentally brought into the spotlight in 2017 through travelers’ posts and photographs. Since then, it has slowly started appearing on more and more travel itineraries. But at least for now, it still feels like one of those places that was found almost by accident, a place that has not yet fully lost its harshness or its wild character.

Getting here is not easy. And maybe that is one of the main reasons why Tazi Canyon has remained relatively untouched for so long. It is about 95 kilometers from Antalya, and the final part of the route is rough enough to keep it from becoming an ordinary stop. You do not casually end up here. You come here on purpose.

More Than Just A Viewpoint

Part of the beauty of Tazi Canyon begins with the road leading to it. This area is also one of the important points on the St. Paul Trail, a 500-kilometer long hiking route. By following this route, you eventually reach Gaziler Village. If you prefer, you can also use the road on the eastern bank of the Köprüçay River and get to Gaziler Village more directly. So this is not just a scenic stop. It is a place that makes more sense when you see it together with the geography around it and the walking culture that passes through it.

After Gaziler Village, the route becomes rougher. The road turns to dirt, the surroundings grow quieter, and the whole area slowly stops feeling like a standard tourist destination. After that, it becomes a matter of patience. Through forest tracks, small signs, and narrow paths, the landscape slowly prepares you for what is coming. Then suddenly, the view opens up.

That is where the real impact of Tazi Canyon begins. Because this is not just a pretty viewpoint. It is the kind of place that makes you fall silent without warning.

The Harsh Beauty Of Tazi Canyon

What I like most about it is that it still does not feel overdesigned. It has not yet been turned into a polished viewing platform. It still feels raw, slightly harsh, and just unsettled enough to keep you alert. Maybe that is exactly why it hits so hard.

Before taking photos, it is worth standing still for a few minutes and simply listening. The cicadas, the wind, the silence of the rocks. The power of this place is not only in what you see. It is also in the atmosphere.

The moment you step in front of the canyon, the view hits hard. The sudden drop beneath your feet, the merciless look of the rock walls, and the emptiness stretching below make this far more than a conventional natural attraction. “Beautiful” almost feels too weak for it. It is more like something overwhelming, severe, and difficult to forget.

When To Go

In my opinion, the best time to visit is later in the day. Tazi Canyon becomes much more impressive in the late afternoon light. The sun softens, the heat becomes more bearable, and the whole landscape takes on a deeper and stronger appearance. Earlier in the day, spending time around Köprülü Canyon and getting into the freezing water of the Köprüçay River is also a very good idea. That water really does bring you back to life.

Staying In The Area

If you want to stay nearby, camping by the river works especially well. Spending a night in nature close to Tazi Canyon and heading there after slowing down a little makes the whole experience feel stronger. Places like this reveal themselves better when you do not rush them. When you allow time for the road, the silence, and the waiting, the canyon feels even larger when it finally opens in front of you.

Be Careful Here

But there is one thing that needs to be said clearly: you have to be extremely careful here. This still does not feel like a fully developed visitor site. There are no serious safety measures, protective systems are limited, and the cost of carelessness could be very high. Part of Tazi Canyon’s impact comes from this uncontrolled natural state, but that same thing also creates real danger. This is the kind of place where you need to know your limits.

It Probably Will Not Stay Like This For Long

The thing that stayed with me most was this: Tazi Canyon probably will not remain like this for much longer. Even in April, it was already possible to see the crowds beginning to grow. Places like this tend to lose their silence, cleanliness, and raw character the moment they become too popular. And unfortunately, that process often happens quickly and carelessly here.

That is why I do not think the canyon’s current raw and untouched atmosphere will survive in the same way for very long.

For now, though, it still has real force. It is still one of those places that shakes you a little, gets under your skin, and feels far bigger than it looks in photographs. So if you ever find yourself heading that way, go before it changes. Not only for the view, but for that sudden feeling of emptiness opening in front of you.
